Need help with a house clearance or relocation?

Do you have many items at home that you no longer use? Then the second-hand shop is often a good place to start. Second-hand shops are happy to accept usable items such as furniture, tableware, books, and other goods when they still have some life left in them. However, not everything you no longer need is suitable for the thrift store. I notice this regularly myself, as we also have our own second-hand shop, Joopies handelshuis. During house clearances, we therefore look at which items are still usable and which items are better off being processed in an environmentally friendly manner.

In general, it is quite simple: a second-hand shop usually only wants items that can be reused. So if items are clean, complete, usable, and not broken, there is a good chance you can hand them in at the second-hand shop. But if they are broken, dirty, or no longer have any value, you usually have to find another solution.

When is an item suitable for the second-hand shop?

To determine if items are suitable for the second-hand shop, I usually ask myself if someone else can still use them. Items certainly don’t always have to be new. A sign of use or a small scratch doesn’t have to be a problem either. But items that have been damp, for example, are falling apart, or are missing parts are often not suitable for a second life.

Furthermore, I also look at whether there is any demand for it at all. An item can still be in excellent condition, but that doesn’t automatically mean there is a demand for it.

Which items are usually allowed at the second-hand shop?

There are quite a few different items that are often welcome at second-hand shops. However, it can vary greatly per shop. For items in the categories below, you usually have a good chance that a second-hand shop will accept them.

Furniture

Neat tables, chairs, cabinets, sideboards, sofas, and other furniture are regularly accepted by second-hand shop. They must still be usable, neat, clean, and there must be a demand for them. Space can also play a role for second-hand shop. These items take up a lot of room, and the second-hand shop must have that available.

Do you have old furniture that is not suitable for reuse? You can have old furniture collected for a fee by a clearance company like us. You will then be rid of your old stuff quickly and won’t have to carry anything yourself or take it to the recycling center.

Clothing and textiles

Plenty of clean and usable clothing, shoes, bags, or other textiles are welcome at many second-hand shop. Clothing must, of course, still be in good condition and wearable. Clothing that is no longer wearable can often be processed through textile collection.

Tableware, accessories, and small household items

Items such as plates, glasses, cutlery, pans, vases, lamps, and similar goods are often welcome at the second-hand shop. They must, of course, be in neat condition, without cracks or dirty stains that won’t come out.

It is best to pack fragile items well; this prevents damage during transport and is also much nicer for second-hand shop employees.

Books, toys, and hobby items

Books, toys, games, or other hobby items can also often be handed in at the second-hand shop. Old encyclopedias and outdated textbooks are, of course, not always in demand, but you can often make someone else happy with nice books, toys, or other hobby items. The items must be complete and clean. Additionally, keep in mind that there is never a guarantee that a second-hand shop will accept everything. Sometimes a shop already has enough stock of certain items, such as books, causing them to temporarily stop accepting them.

Electronics and appliances

Rules can vary for electronics. Some second-hand shop only accept items that still work well. But there are also thrift stores that take in defective electronics because they recycle them. Therefore, it is smart to always check with the second-hand shop beforehand to see what conditions they set.

It can be even more difficult with large appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators, or dryers, as not every shop has enough storage to accept them. It can also be difficult to get these to the second-hand shop; special transport is often required.

If the second-hand shop does not accept the appliances or if you are unable to get them there, you can also use our appliance collection service.

Bicycles, tools, and sporting goods

Items such as bicycles, tools, and sporting goods in good condition are often welcome at second-hand shop. Here too, the condition of the items must be good. A badly broken bicycle is not often accepted, but if it is still usable or easy to repair, a second-hand shop might still be able to do something with it. Tools also often retain value and can frequently be reused. For large sporting goods such as treadmills, it is sometimes a question of whether there is enough space available at a thrift store.

What is usually not allowed at the second-hand shop?

A second-hand shop is intended for reuse and is not a replacement for the recycling center. Items that are heavily soiled, wet, moldy, unsafe, or broken are therefore often refused. Construction and demolition waste, chemicals, paint, and other hazardous waste also do not belong at the second-hand shop but must be taken to the recycling center or collected.

Why does one second-hand shop accept something while another doesn’t?

If your items are refused at one second-hand shop, it doesn’t mean that no second-hand shop wants them. Second-hand shops decide for themselves what they accept and what they refuse. Storage space, stock, and demand all play a role in this. It is also possible that different requirements are set for the condition of the items. You can often find something about the intake conditions on the website, or you can call ahead and tell them what you have.

What can you do with items the second-hand shop doesn’t want?

If the second-hand shop doesn’t accept something, it doesn’t necessarily mean the items have to go straight into the residual waste. If the item is still usable, you can still try to sell it through platforms such as Marktplaats or Facebook Marketplace. You can also offer items for free here or post them in a local giveaway group.

If no one wants the items after that, it’s time to throw them away or take them to the recycling center. If you don’t have the time or suitable transport for that, or if it concerns large and heavy items, you can also call in our waste collection service.

A complete house full of stuff?

If you have a house full of stuff, more is often needed than just a trip to the second-hand shop. Second-hand shops only accept what is usable for them AND where there is space and demand at that moment. As a result, part of the belongings often remains behind with a complete household inventory.

During a complete house clearance, we always look at the entire inventory. We discuss which items you want to keep, what can possibly still be reused, and what can be disposed of. This way, you don’t have to visit all sorts of different places yourself and you aren’t left with items that the second-hand shop won’t accept.
