A messy garage? We all know it. The garage is often the place to put things “for later,” but before you know it, it is completely full and there is no getting through. When the garage is very full, it can be difficult to start cleaning up. That’s why we have put together a simple step-by-step plan that you can follow to get your garage organized again. And would you rather outsource it? We have a solution for that, too.
Garage cleanup: how do you do it?
Cleaning out a garage can be quite a job, but a good approach will get you a long way. Below is a clear roadmap.
Step 1 – Everything out
Start by emptying the entire garage. Yes, really everything. This is the only way you can see what you have in the house (or well, in the garage). Put everything outside or in another room so that you make room to redecorate and you can give the garage a good cleaning.
Step 2 – Sorting
Sort your items into three categories: keep, discard and doubtful. Be critical in this. If you haven’t used something in years, do you really need it? Often you find things back in the garage that you didn’t even know you had anymore. In fact, that almost always already means they can go. The more critical you are in this process, the longer it will take for your garage to fill up again.
Items that can be disposed of can be taken to the recycling center. Would you rather leave this to us? Then we can also help you by collecting your waste. We will come by with our van and you can give us anything from small things to large cabinets. We will then take care of it.
Step 3 – Cleaning
When the garage is empty, it’s the perfect time for a good cleaning. Think of removing cobwebs, dusting and staining, etc. Do this thoroughly, because when stuff is back in, this is a lot harder. So take advantage of this moment.
Step 4 – Setting up
Think about where you want to store which items. Tools with the chore stuff, garden cushions with summer stuff, and so on. It is useful to think in zones: for example, a chore area, a garden area and a storage area. That way you will also know how to find something back much easier at a later time.
Step 5 – Organize
Once everything is in place, move on to organizing. Use labels, bins and shelving. This will keep things organized and prevent clutter from returning quickly.
Garage cleanup tips
A tidy garage starts with smart choices. Here are some practical tips!
Make use of a storage system
A good storage system really makes a difference. Think of wall racks, stackable bins or a mobile workbench. This creates a lot of extra space and makes it look tidier. These racks are available at hardware stores or IKEA, for example.

Hang stuff on the wall
Large items like garden hoses or tools? Hang them up! This keeps the floor free and makes it look tidier.
Use transparent containers
With see-through storage bins, you can see at a glance what’s inside. Ideal for seasonal items or hobby items.
Make cleanup a habit
To prevent the garage from quickly filling up again, it is smart to clean up every now and then. Agree with yourself to walk through the garage once a quarter, for example. Small effort, big difference!
Use labels for overview
Use labels or tags to mark bins and shelves. That way you (or another family member) will always know where everything belongs.
