Cleaning out a shed can sometimes be a big job. When you haven’t looked at your shed, gazebo or garage for a long time, it often has a lot of stuff collected in it. Sometimes there is so much stuff in there that there seems to be no end in sight. Yet sometimes it is important to clean out your shed. Especially when you are clearing out your house or moving house. We give you a concrete roadmap on how to tidy your shed and tips on what to do about a messy shed!
Preparations
Good preparation is half the battle. In any case, make sure you set aside enough time to clean out your shed. After all, a thorough cleanup takes quite a bit of time. You also want to avoid rushing, because that often causes a lot of stress.

Step-by-step barn cleanup plan
1. Empty the barn completely
To thoroughly clean out the shed, gazebo or garage, it is best to empty the shed completely first. For example, place all items outside on the grass (make sure you pick a day with a good weather forecast!). This will give you a clear overview of what you all have and allow you to properly inspect the shed. This also makes the next step a lot easier: cleaning
2. Clean the barn thoroughly
Time for a thorough cleaning! Probably a lot of dirt became visible when you emptied the shed. This is only natural, because there are a lot of places that you normally can’t reach very well. Now you can clean everything properly: sweep the floors, remove all the dust and clean all the shelves and shelving.
3. Sort all the stuff
While all the items are still outside the barn, it is a good time to sort through all the items. We always recommend making 3 piles: what you want to keep, what you want to throw away and what you want to donate. Be critical in this process. If you didn’t even remember you had some items, you probably aren’t going to use them anymore. Old and/or broken items can also often go right away. Often you can still make others happy with items that are still in fine condition.
4. Place the items back
If all goes well, a lot less stuff can go back in the shed now! So this step should take less time as step 1. In this step, make sure you have an efficient layout. Make sure the stuff you don’t use much is in the back of the shed and the stuff you use more often is in the front. What always makes a big difference is the use of shelving. This is because with racks you can make the best use of the space and you can always access your stuff very easily. Highly recommended!
5. Dispose of the waste
Once you have rearranged the shed, you can throw away the old stuff. Take items you can recycle to a collection point and sell or donate the still usable items. This will prevent your shed from filling up right away.
Barn cleanup tips
1. Pay attention to the weather
It may seem obvious, but make sure you clean up your shed in good weather. After all, when it’s damp, you can’t just put stuff outside.
2. Use transparent storage boxes
Transparent storage boxes are ideal for a shed. This is because you can immediately see which items are where.
3. Invest in shelving
We already gave this one away a bit, of course, but shelving is ideal for a tidy shed. This way you keep your shed organized and this way you can easily access your stuff
4. Provide good lighting
Good lighting is nice when you are cleaning up your shed. This way you can clean up and polish your shed properly.
5. Use the walls
Use the walls to hang things. Think of tools, shovels, brooms, etc. This keeps it organized and allows you to access them easily.
